Concept Development for the Besse Residence Project

description

Yolk is the result of many hours of concept development. This concept delved deep into the elements and principles of design of the iconic plastic Easter egg used in hunts throughout the American childhood. Finding the meaning of the relationship between this egg and the idea of home was the central focus of this part of the project. The outcome was a flowing piece with a rigid “core” centered on the concepts of happiness, “runaway”, and a free spirit.

reflection

I did not realize that abstracting such a small object could result in so many different designs. The “pulling it apart” process really opened my eyes to how one can find so much in something that looks so little; sometimes less is really more when you take the time to look into it. After many hours of staring at my inspiration photo and pulling apart the elements, principles, and overall feel of the plastic Easter egg, I began my thumbnail process. Creating the thumbnails took quite a bit of time, but it was definitely worth it. I came up with so many create thumbnails that could honestly be used for so many other partis and designs, though it will never have the same meaning for another space as it will for the Besse Residence.

Moving from a 2-D parti to a 3-D study model proved to be interesting, though not necessarily difficult. I believe my biggest difficulty was simply finding the right material to use for each study model; deciding how to get the materials to fit together and convey the right message has never been so hard for me before. I ended up spending about one studio time (approximately 2-3 hours) on study models, but two days of work (approximately 6-8 hours) on the final model.

This process really opened my eyes to how amazing the design process really is, and excited me more for what is to come. I now know that I prefer to work in a firm where I can be a part of this creative side of design; I do not see myself having the best and most productive work come from a drafting position, though I know I must start somewhere in this profession. I definitely have this concept development process to thank for helping me find my favorite part of the design process.
