nature's infrastructure

"...taught me a lot about patience, extreme fatigue, and finally being proud..."

description

This city park features some of the most beautiful sloping hills within miles of the metropolis. From an aerial view, the park is full of luscious eye-capturing green vegetation. The metalwork in this area reflects the man-made texture of the urban infrastructure as though it is nature’s own framework. The natural beauty of the park and the austere surrounding buildings create a seamless integration of the two aesthetics. Furthermore, the sculpture itself captures rainwater to fully bring to life the essence of nature among the city.

Reflection

Linear and planar elements were possibly the easiest and hardest to work with when considering all the projects assigned. I realized how much I love linear design, and why it has so greatly influenced a lot of my previous projects. However, I also came to the realization that I cannot live without the organic side of design; I desire curves and spontaneity. I learned through this project that I will always have designs that will continually coexist between both what is considered “modern” (i.e. linear) and “classic” (i.e. organic). I love every prototype and the final result of this project; I would not take back a single mistake that I made along the way.

This project challenged me quite a bit when it came to converting from 3D to 2D. However, for converting from 2D to 3D, I had absolutely no problems. The ideas flowed into my head nonstop based on just the one pattern I chose as my final inspiration. Yet, when it came to sketching some prototypes onto trace paper or into my notebook, I found it oddly difficult to figure out how to convey the idea in full. I almost always had to use multiple notes just to explain to myself for future reference what was going on.

I came up with a lot of prototypes that were very different, yet there was definitely a unity among every one of them. I firmly believe that loving my pattern as much as I did highly influenced every model I built; this is a goal I would like to strive for in the future, as I feel it creates a better outcome if one central idea is carried throughout. This had to be the most complex series I did all semester, but I find it the most beautiful. This project taught me a lot about patience, extreme fatigue, and finally being proud of every prototype and drawing I did; I would say, so far, this is one of the most influential and beneficial projects I have ever done.
